Backlogs are one of the most fearsome enemies of managers in every business. It causes many problems, such as panicking, downtime, and more.
If worse comes to worst, your customers won’t be satisfied with your delivery time resulting in bad impressions.
Of course, every business-minded person knows the consequences. You’ll have fewer customers, and some of them might be dissatisfied with the software development services you deliver.
Fortunately, backlogs aren’t that scary. You just have to be able to manage it and it’s okay to work without worrying about the little details.
Erase unnecessary tasks
While this is hard to do, you need to make a habit of deleting things that aren’t really necessary.
After all, you may delete them today and tomorrow, when your team is all caught up, you won’t have anything to do since you already deleted some items.
However, you can easily come up with these ideas if you at least glance at them once in a while.
Separate items that are too much for the team
If you’ve been in the industry for long, you’ll understand that there are only limited tasks that you’re able to pull off.
Some of them might be too much for your team to work on, for now.
While it’s not advisable to completely erase them from your list, I’d suggest making a separate list for it.
Review the backlog
It would also be to your advantage if you constantly check the backlog. Don’t let a week pass by without you reviewing it.
You may think that there’s no point in looking at it, but you’ll find that there are many benefits of doing so.
You can come up with an idea from it. It may ease your nerves. You may have even forgotten to erase a task.
Don’t add things that aren’t priorities
As I’ve mentioned, it’s crucial to keep your backlog relatively small so it can be manageable.
With that said, make sure you will only add things that you plan on prioritizing. Otherwise, don’t add it immediately.
You may only do that if you’d already caught up with everything, which is a fix for the first step mentioned above.
The bottom line is, you don’t have to despise backlogs so much. In fact, learning how to manage it is better than having no backlog. You have more work to do, which means more revenue.
At the same time, your team is getting a sense of urgency which pushes them to do things more efficiently and seriously.
